The other day I saw a picture of a pineapple plant and was actually taken aback at the fact that a very large heavy pineapple grows on the top of this plant. For some reason I always thought that pineapples grew in the ground like potatoes or carrots or maybe on top of the ground in vines like watermelons.
I guess it goes to show that when you get everything from the grocery store you take for granted where things grow – or how they grow. Which is why our cookbook is going to have a section on growing plants from some of your kitchen scraps.
You actually CAN grow a pineapple from it’s top – but the fruit won’t grow under the dirt. You can grow sweet potatoes, green onions, ginger and garlic. That’s kinda cool – right?
