One of mom’s favorite poems that I wrote for Mother’s Day has again made it’s showcase… in a most miraculous way. A few months ago a child called me out of the blue from Detroit. She found this poem and decided I was worth calling to find out how to write poetry.  So of course, […]

What is the Troll Patrol? Hamilton Troll realizes in our next book “Hamilton Troll meets Rudy Rat” (available July 4th) that there are some children out there that are ‘mean’ to others…. You see Rudy Rat wasn’t a very nice rat to the other children.  He didn’t know how to make friends so he took their […]

Tomorrow – a mystical land where 99%...

I’ll do it tomorrow. The day just isn’t long enough. I don’t feel like it today. I’m too busy. It can wait. We’ve all said it. We’ve all done it.  We all are guilty of it. But instead of accepting it as fact and laughing about it as if it is perfectly okay to do […]

Be a Good You and Let Them Through

The other day I was stuck in traffic, construction traffic, with no shoulders, no turn lanes and then came the train.  Cars were backed up as far as the eye could see and we waited… And waited. Finally the train ended, the gates went up and the traffic started flowing – slowly. As my side […]

DEAR Texas Radio Interview Part 9

Interviewed by DEAR TEXAS Radio: Author Kathleen J. Shields tells all! These past weeks I’ve posted clips from my radio interview from Wimberley Valley Radio 94.1 FM KWVH and their latest show DEAR Texas Radio. The last two questions, in my opinion, were the most important because they gave me a chance to inspire others. […]

If kids aren’t supposed to take candy from...

Don’t take candy from strangers! Do parents still tell that to children? Do parents still teach their children about the dangers of drugs laced in candy or razor blades in chocolate? I remember those talks vividly. I remember mom saying, don’t ever eat an unwrapped piece of candy. Always have her check the candy first. […]

Butter your palms

Ever since we started creating this cookbook for children, I’ve been scouring recipe websites to gain inspiration and insight. I’m not taking recipes, that would be plagiarism, I’m trying to learn what I can because I’m normally not allowed in the kitchen. When Carol wanted to do popcorn balls, I started researching what we were […]

My Thinking Cap – A Funny Poem

Anyone ever feel like this??? Oh my, oh my, what can I do? I’m filling up with doubt. My thinking cap must have a hole ‘Cause my thoughts keep coming out! The other day I went upstairs, …To get what?  I don’t know. And as I stood there like a bump on a log That […]

What makes a successful author?

The other day I met another children’s book author whose publisher suggested she talk with other successful children’s book authors to get an idea of what to do. She told me this because she wanted to talk to me.   I don’t know if she came to that decision after she saw my booth, or the […]

The Flower that couldn’t be seen….

A friend of mine was stuck in traffic one day when he just happened to look over to the side of the road and see a flowering plant (some may call it a weed – but we’ll get into that in a moment).  This flowering plant was stuck in the bottom of the ditch and […]

The greatest test of courage on earth is t...

The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart. Robert Green Ingersoll Did you lose the game? Did you get passed up for the promotion? Did you receive another rejection letter? If you were defeated in any category of life and stopped trying all together, you’ve failed the test of […]

A Message from Starlit Troll

Award Winning Author Kathleen J Shields educational books hamilton troll

In the 12th book of the Hamilton Troll Adventures, Hamilton and Starlit have a Big Race. They run and swim, climb and fly – but in the end there is a winner and a loser and the loser is not being a very good sport. In the end this is a good message for all […]

Eat flies – Date a pig – Live ...

The other day I saw this Kermit the Frog billboard and while it made me laugh, it also made me think – this is exactly what I keep saying! No matter what your dream is; how weird, crazy, difficult, adventurous, impossible or far away – follow your dreams. If you don’t do it – no […]

A Very Leprechaun Christmas

‘Twas the evening ‘fore Christmas and all was asleep
Except for the Big Man and his reindeer peep.
They were blasting through snow clouds, delivering gifts
When Rudolph began sneezing and throwing some fits.

They jerked to the right. Then to the left.
The sled was all jostled and cracked from the heft.
Suddenly the magic that made the sleigh go,
Began pouring from the backside in a sparkly flow.

Directing the reindeer towards the first empty field
He landed that sleigh, hopped out a kneeled.
He took in the damage when the reindeer moaned,
All knew this Christmas would be postponed!

Santa was pacing, bleak and upset.
He was shivering cold and his feet were all wet.
Giving up was not him, but the sled wouldn’t fly,
‘Twas no way the reindeer could get back in the sky!

Where do I find the time for it all?

Why I am I working so hard on my writing? Why am I putting so many books out? Why am I writing so many blogs? Where do I find the time for it all? It’s the fact that time is running out that is pushing me so hard towards finishing these goals.  God gave me […]

The Great Cookie Debacle

When a show requires you to bring six dozen homemade cookies and you don’t bake… think twice!

Two Stories and then the Truth

Another concept regarding perceptions – I loved this graphic! They say: There are two sides to every story – and then there is the truth.  Some people are incapable of understanding this. They know their side of the story and are unable to see any other side. It’s kind of a great explanation of the split in […]
